Victor Ratnayake - Sri Lankan Master Of Music
Victor Ratnayake (born February 18, 1942) is a popular Sri Lankan musician. He was the first Sri Lankan musician to hold a live one man concert; His concert known as "SA" was first performed in 1973, and was an instant success. Ratnayake credits his success to his "fitting blend of Western music with Ragadari classical music." His songs deal with diverse themes that vary from love, to patriotism and Buddhism.
Matara Achchi is the first film he composed music for and it's Sandakada Pahana song sung by Sunil Edirisinghe is still very popular among Sinhala music fans. Ratnayake also has composed music for films like Siribo Aiya, Podi Malli, Sarungale, Hulawali and Athuru Mithuru.
Early life
Ratnayake was born in a small village near Kadugannawa. His father, Rathnayake Veda Mahaththaya, was an apothecary and sang "noorthi gee," a type of Sinhala folk songs. Victor got his first instrument at the age of nine when his father presented him a harmonium for his birthday. He studied singing and various instruments under musician Cyril Perera at the M.G.P. Institute in Mulgampola in his teens. In 1963, he began attending the State Music College, now known as the Institute of Aesthetic Studies. He wrote his first song, an ode to Lord Buddha, in 1964; it received play on radio stations run by the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation.
In 1966, Ratnayke joined the Ministry of Education as a music instructor, and was assigned to a post at Eththalapitiya Maha Vidyalaya in Bandarawela. He would later look back to his days as a teacher in his song "Sihil Sulang Ralle," which described the beauty of his surroundings that he noted as he travelled on the train to the school. The lyrics were penned by Sena Weerasekera on Ratnayake's recollections.
Sa Music Concert
By 1973, Ratnayake was a trained musician and noted that there were no one man concerts. The closest was "Shravanaradhana" a joint concert by Amaradeva and Nanda Malini. On the urging of his friends Premakirthi de Alwis, Sunil Ariyaratne, K.D.K Dharmawardena, R.R. Samarakoon,Chintana Jayasena and Bandara K. Wijetunga, Victor decided to attempt such an event. The first Sa concert was held on July 20, 1973, at the Lumbini Theatre, Havelock Town. It is widely considered a turning point in Sri Lankan music.
The name "Sa" came from the root or tonic note sa or ‘C’ in the Indian music scale and was suggested by Chintana Jayasena. Jayasena pointed to the fact that no Sri Lankan drama, film or work of art bore a name of just one syllable at the time and believed that it would bring luck.
"Sa" was highly popular, and Ratnayke's gained many fans following its inception. One female fan wrote "Do you know that I treasure 49 hairs of yours?" in a fan letter, expressing how many times she has seen Ratnayake's show. Critics described the show as "exquisite insanity" and a "melodic lunacy" because of the fervor shown by Ratnayke's fans, who would sometimes attack auditoriums where he was playing when they couldn't get in.
Ratnayake's style was influenced by musicians like Sunil Shantha, Ananda Samarakone and C. T. Fernando who he considered "pioneers in the music field" for their use of "classical Ragadari and Hindustani music" as their starting point.
Recent Events
Ratnayake continues to be a popular musician in the 2000s; He recently threw the 1500th concert of "Sa." His latest album Detolaga Sinaha was released in 2006.

Roger Seneviratne - One Of Sri Lankan Master Actor
Sri Lankan master generalist Anjana Gamage had a execlusive interview with Sri Lankan well talented master actor Roger Seneviratne. Above is the conversation.
Roger Rooted In Teledramas
Those who watch "Chathurya" telecast every Sunday at 9.00pm on Swarnavahini will remember Themiya played by amiable actor Roger Seneviratne. We were able to catch a glimpse of this busy actor when he was on the sets at a huge mansion on Pepiliyana Mawatha at Kohuwala.
The location was well-known writer Martin Wickremasinghe's daughter's house. The shooting was for another episode of Chathurya.
Actress Nayana Kumari who plays the lead role as Chathurya and Nilanthi Wijesingha as Themiya's mother were also on the set at the time.
Roger Seneviratne, One Of The Busiest Actors
Although Roger became popular through the small screen, he began his acting career with the theatre.
"I joined the theatre in 1976 when one of my friends, Milton Jayasooriya introduced me to veteran dramatist Sugathapala de Silva. His political play " Dunnadunu Gamuwe" was my first back stage role of a prompter and as an assistant stage manager", he said.
After "Dunnadunu Gamuwe", I took part in many stage plays such as Prof. Sarachchandra's " Wessanthara", " Merchant of Venice", " Twelfth Night" and " Mandaram Wehi", he said.
Then he tried his hands on translations and his first work was " Death of a Clerk, a short story by Anton Chekov. It was later made into a short play by him as an experimental production in 1986.
Awards
He then translated "Caligula" which was made into a play titled " Paswenna" (The fifth). The play won eleven awards at the drama competition conducted by the National Youth Services Council (NYSC) and it also won the awards for the best director and best production at the State Drama Festival in 1993.
"The stage plays "Paswenna", Sunanda Pushpakumara's "Spartacus", Uditha Gooneratne's " Inhuman" (Avamanawa), Susil Gooneratne's " Men with Shadows" are some landmarks in my acting career in the theatre" , he said.
"Whether it is a translation or an original production, my feeling is that we should go to the world with the talent of acting. The language is no longer a barrier for acting. I have already taken part in international productions. I played a role as a university student in " Mother Teresa" and " Return to Bangalore" as well", he said.
Roger began his film career by acting in a short film " Parajithayo" directed by Prasanna Amarasinghe in 1981. He has acted in 12 films so far. Parakrama Niriella's " Ayoma', Vishvanath Buddhika's " Sihina Deshayen" and " Milla Soya", " Lokuduwa", Vasantha Obeysekera's " Dorakada Marawa", Dharmasena Pathiraja's " Wasuli" are some of them. The latest of his acting career, K.A.W. Perera's " Sumedha" will be screened shortly.
Skills
"We need a school for actors. Such a school will help improve their skills. I have participated in several workshops locally and overseas. Therefore I know the value of a practising art. Several associations are struggling for the rights of the artistes. But so far no government has supported them to achieve this target", he pointed out.
"Santhrasaya" a story based on James Hadly Chase's " One Bright Summer Morning" was Roger's first teledrama production and it achieved the best rating for ITN in 2001. His second production " Chathurya" which is now being telecast has also received the highest ratings.
"Viewers sometimes complain that there are some differences between the Chathurya novel and the tele production, specially when it comes to the background of Chathurya's family. When asked to explain he said that he had done some changes in consultation with the author Edward Mallawarchchi.
"Although I have come from the theatre, the Sri Lankan theatre has not improved. The reason is that we don't study on theatre.
It is something that has a connection with the soul. Practice is essential for theatre and when the intention is wrong, the product will be affected. You should not produce with the purpose of winning awards", he said.
Roger who has three sons has a rare hobby of collecting roots. Whenever he observes a root, he wants to take it for his collection. So far he has more than 200 roots with him.

Amila Abeysekara - Famous Sri Lankan Young Actor
Famous generalist Shabna Cader had a exclusive interview with Sri Lankan young talented actor Amila Abeysekara. This story made according to their conversations.
Amila Abeysekera had no idea that he would become an actor, and that too a very determined one, when he was a school boy. His childhood ambition was to be an outstanding cricketer.
Hailing from Kandy, Amila first received his education in Dharmaraja, Kandy and then moved to President’s College in Maharagama. “I was not involved in any drama or absolutely anything to do with the performing arts. I was very interested in sport activities and wanted to become a cricketer. That was my initial goal. I guess some things in life take sudden turns and you end up doing something totally different to what you had in mind at first,” said Abeysekera.
It was during the latter part of his education when Abeysekera got the opportunity of becoming a presenter at Swarnavahini in 1998, that the first seeds for his future career as an actor, were sown. While working there for two years, he had many chances of appearing in various commercials. In 2000 came the big moment of his life, when he was offered a role in the tele-drama ‘Depathnai’ in which he played the role of a sportive and very relaxed character.
He continued to star in over 35 dramas in less than eight years; years in which he took up, in the beginning, similar roles, that were very sportive, and thereafter the role of a lover. “I have yet to play a really challenging role; I have not had the opportunity of receiving one but I hope that I will in time to come” Abeysekara added.
Out of the selected number of roles that he has portrayed, Abeysekara told The Nation that the role of an engineer in ‘Tharu Kumari’ was his favorite. “It is a very decent and well balanced role which is why I like it so much,” he said.

During his free time, Abeysekera loves to spend his time at home. “I do not get to be at home often, so whenever I can I love to stay inside and sleep! I also watch a lot of movies and love listening to music of all kinds” he said.
